Attraction: A Universal Condition Across Matter, Mind, Consciousness, and Nibbāna

What Makes Things Attractive? Why are we drawn to certain people, appearances, sounds, tastes, beliefs—and even spiritual ideas? In this post, “The Universality of Attraction: From Matter to Nibbāna,” I explore attraction through an Abhidhamma-inspired philosophical lens. I begin with the familiar example of magnetism and then examine attraction in several different forms: * Sensory attraction: beauty, music, taste, smell, and touch * Mental attraction to emotions, memories, personalities, and virtues * The appeal of ideas through simplicity, novelty, authority, flattery, and explanatory power * Why an idea’s attractiveness does not necessarily mean that it is true * How spiritual practice gradually moves from sensory attraction toward wholesome qualities of mind * Why even attachment to virtue and beautiful ideas must ultimately be transcended * Nirvana as freedom from the conditioned forces of attraction and repulsion Attraction is not limited to sensual desire. It also influences the way we understand ourselves, other people, religion, and the world. By understanding how attraction operates, we can create a small but important space between what appears attractive and how we respond. In that space, greater freedom becomes possible. 🎥 Watch the full talk on YouTube:
